Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng)

Panax quinquefolius is used as a tonic and natural stress reducer. It also helps to build qi, or life force. The genus name Panax comes from the Greek pas, all and akos, cure; or pancakes.

Panacea was a goddess in Greek mythology who could heal all diseases and who found a remedy for maintain good health.

Panax quinquefolius also has a reputation as an aphrodisiac. Panax quinquefolius produce triterpenoid saponins called ginsenosides.

This species has been prized in both official and folk medicine. In folk medicine the plant has been used as tonic, a treatment for hives to soothe nervousness.

Usage among the Native Americans, Panax quinquefolius has been widely valued as a tonic, even as a panacea. The plant also is traditionally used to enhance sexual performance and improve sexual function. It stimulates the male sex glands and has proven successful against certain types of impotence.

Numerous other ailments, ranging from intestinal worms to tuberculosis, have also been treated with Panax quinquefolius by Native American.
