A rose is a woody perennial plant belonging to the genus Rosa in the family Rosaceae. Rose flower is the common name for the petals of the plants Rosa gallica L., Rosa centifolia L., or Rosa damascena Mill. At present time, over 200 rose species and more than 18000 cultivars form of the plant have been identified.
Rose is considered as King of Flowers and symbol of love. Species, cultivars and hybrids are widely grown for their beauty and fragrant. Roses are best known as ornamental plants grown for their flowers in the gardens and houses. The medicinal parts of the plants are the flowers, petals, rose hips, root, root bark and essential oil.
Rose flowers are anti-depressant, anti-spasmodic, aphrodisiac, astringent, increase bile production, cleansing, anti- bacterial and antiseptic. The Chinese use the flowers to prepare a drink which acts as an energy stimulant, blood tonic and also works in case of digestive irregularities.
Roses have mood-boosting and stress relieving properties. Traditionally, relief for a cranky mood was to inhale rose vapour from the tea. Today, the uplifting qualities of rose can be felt by sipping on the fragrant bloom.
The petals have high antioxidant property that helps in curing many health ailments. Rose petals are mildly sedative, antiseptic, anti- inflammatory, and antiparasitic. Dried petals can solve problems with digestive system. They are also mild laxative, a good supportive tonic for the heart, and useful for lowering cholesterol.
Rose hips are used for stomach disorders like stomach acid deficiency, gall stones and gall bladder ailments, kidney disorders, increasing immune function during exhaustion etc. Rose hips tea is also used in the treatment of diarrhoea.
Rose is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, asthma, leukoderma and inflammation of mouth. Creams from the essential oil of rose are used to treat dry skin. Rose oil heals depression, grief, nervous stress and tension. It helps in the reduction of thirst, healing old cough, special complaints of women, wound healing, and skin health.
