Cloves and blood sugar level management

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is now a common, growing, serious and costly, but potentially preventable disease appearing across populations globally. Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar, vascular problems, neurological problems, and high blood glucose levels due to decreased insulin excretion or insulin resistance or both.

People with diabetes are at risk for advanced cardiovascular diseases because of high blood glucose levels.

Clove buds are important spices used across the world as natural remedy and in folklore for many diseases management. Cloves offer anti-inflammatory, analgesic and digestive health benefits for diabetes. Cloves also help keep the blood sugar levels in check and are known to promote insulin production, further controlling diabetes.

Clove reportedly modulated physiological responses in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol) is a naturally occurring phenol essential oil and makes up to 90% of the clove oil. It is known to be an antioxidant, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and known to have neuroprotective effects.

Clove oil helps in maintaining the insulin levels. The postprandial insulin and glucose response mechanism is improved significantly on consuming clove oil.
