Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo biloba is a unique plant. Ginkgo biloba is a deciduous tree that lives up to 1000 years and grows to a height of 100 to 122 ft and a diameter of 3 to 4 ft. The tree was able to survive millions of years as the only member of a whole class of plants and its extracts of leaves are commonly used as phytomedicines in the treatment of peripheral and cerebral ischemia.

Terpenes, flavonoids, organic acids, polyacetate derived compounds, carbohydrates, miscellaneous, organic compounds and inorganic compounds were found in Ginkgo biloba.

Ginkgo biloba extract is often standardized to contain 24% flavone glycosides, these molecules represent a convenient analytic reference group.

The three major backbone flavonoids of the Ginkgo biloba flavonols are quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetine.

Modern pharmacopoeias mention the use of the leaves on the treatment of cardiac and pulmonary disease but also against dysentery and filariasis.
